Trouble Shooting

The largest percentage of failed turbochargers are caused by lubrication problems. Turbocharger problems experienced in the field can often be corrected by system troubleshooting.
Check the following item again, and please confirm it.

1.Engine lacks power or lacks boost

The turbocharger is normal, if compressor or turbine wheel no rub, no bent , and no problem at wheel spin by finger-tip. The next cause is thought about without pressurizing it in such a state when the output is lacking in it.

(1)Poor in the pressure adjustment of the actuator and poor in the operation.(Even if boost pressure rises too high as for the turbo, it raise a fuel cut and become acceleration defectiveness.)

(2)Exhaust bypass valve (a swing valve) adheres to it, and exhaust gas leaks, and boost is not raise.

2.Oil leak / White smoke

An oil leak and white smoke do not stop after turbo replaced .

(1)The oil which leaked remains in the muffler however turbocharger replaced. It operates until oil is burned out.

(2)Excessive high internal crankcase pressure cause turbocharger oil leakage from Compressor and turbine seal.
As for the turbocharger, oil does not leak the center housing inside outside by keeping minus number pressure. This is the following condition, and center housing inside becomes plus pressure and wakes up an oil leak even if a turbo is normal. Because excessive blowbye (Since combustion gas leaks excessively) and blow by are not discharged appropriately, this happens.

(3)Oil breathe into turbo inlet hose from blowbye hose by plugged air-cleaner.

3.Noise / symphonic noise / Clarinetist noise

The turbocharger gives a loud sound of frequency peculiar to turbo individually. It is necessary to recognize a sound by the abnormality of the turbo. As for the (allophone) there is abnormality, and to utter, next is thought about.

  • (1)From the plumbing filler part of the exhaust gas and sound by air leak, a whistle sound
  • (2)Compressor wheel and Turbine wheel rubbing on housing
  • (3)Noise by bending brade

4.Turbocharger rotating section binding or
dragging

The turbo is with bearing material contact and binding up of rotor, but wakes up the binding of rotor by the following cause as well as it.

  • (1)Excessive carbon build-up behind turbine wheel when it continues running as leak of oil. Excessive carbon rubbing turbine wheel and binding rotor.
  • (2)Foreign object in exhaust system, and locked wheel by object sandwiched in between wheel and heat shroud.

Check before turbocharger installation

Check when turbocharger install

Before turbo install, inject engine oil from turbo oil inlet, rotate a wheel with a finger, and oil should spread round a bearing part.

Check after turbocharger installation

Don't raise engine rotation rapidly after engine starting and hold the idling state for 10 minutes. Actually run after engine warmth and check the operation situation of a turbocharger.

The damage situation of each turbocharger part.

The turbocharger has a relapse of a trouble only by having changed a turbo depending on the cause of the trouble.
The largest percentage of failed turbochargers are caused by lubrication problems. Turbocharger problems experienced in the field can often be corrected by system troubleshooting.
Always inspect and assess turbocharger condition before removal from the engine. Check the following item and confirm it.

A1.Broken Turbine Wheel shaft, locking wheel

Possibility of Insufficient Luburication :Check oil lubrication line, replace oil feed pipe.
It is a characteristic that the insufficient luburication / running out of temporary oil film, turbine shaft which rortate super-high-turbine speed will be in a high temperature as for the turning shaft and purple (a temper color) that firing entered stays to bearing and the branded shaft.

An exhaust side blade in the case of a ceramic wheel

Because it is very likely that a ceramic piece remains between turbo and catalyst, confirm it elaborately

Check when turbocharger install

Change engine oil. Engine oil should surely use the grade specified by a maker.

Check after installation

Don't raise engine rotation rapidly after engine starting and hold the idling state for 10 minutes. Actually run after engine warmth and check the operation situation of a turbocharger.

A2.Insufficient luburication / running out of temporary oil film

Carbon slugged in union bolt

Cause of bearing metal contact

(1)Carbon slugged in union bolt or clogged oil feed pipe (Carbon slugged by heat soak back of the exhaust manifold)

(2)Raise engine rotation rapidly after engine starting without enough oil luburication to bearing section

(3)Lack of quantity of engine oil supply

(4)Oil pressure fall by poor oil pump

In the case of the car which past oil management is not good, and a car career is old, and run a long range: It causes blocking to an oil strainer and insufficient lubrication oil to the turbo even if it changes an engine oil oil filter oil pipe union bolt without oil of enough quantity being drawn in an oil pump and is in danger of a turbo being damaged.

B2.Slugged oil on oil inlet

The case is changed oil feed pipe and clean completely an attachment eye bolt and a block oil hole.

Check before turbocharger installation

C1.Foreign object damage on compressor wheel

Foreign object or material in compressor intet ducting,check intake system.
In case the foreign object damage in turbine or compressor wheel,rotor reaches by imbalance in a shaft occasion with bearing metal contacts when it continues running.

Check before turbocharger installation

Jammed oil drain pipe of the turbo, an inlet pipe, the carbon of the union bolt and am stained and am destroyed, and the confirmation oil pipe of the alien substance does a pipe and a union bolt to a set at the attachment, and change it by all means.
Check of Air cleaner, Objects( Bolt, Nut, Cloth ) in Intake pipe and Exhaust pipe.

Check when turbocharger install

Use a new gasket for a turbo oil inlet / outlet part, and do not use liquid gasket.

Confirmation after install to the engine

Since sludge may flow into a turbo, do not perform engine Flushing after turbo exchange, and cleaning.

C2.None Lock-nut of Compressor Wheel

The case which is up with A, do lubrication system check in particular.

Remove the Lock-nut from inside of air cleaner or intake pipe. ( In case the turbocharger was failed by same cause, warranty claim is not accepted )


Check before turbocharger installation

Foreign object damage to impeller. Please confirm whether a impeller lock nut sticks by all means. When there is not it, It is left in an air cleaner or the intake pipe and turbo failure again. It does not become the object of the claim.


Foreign object damage on compressor wheel

Causes of foreign object in compressor ducting

(1)Impeller lock nut is left in an air cleaner or intake pipe and foreign into compressor wheel again

(2)Having left an alien substance at the time of turbo installation(Washer, Wes)

D.Turbine wheel damage due to a hard object

In case the foreign object damage in turbine or compressor wheel,rotor reaches by imbalance in a shaft occasion with bearing metal contacts when it continues running.

Be careful enough for garbage not to go into the oil entrance of a turbo, a pipe, and a union bolt.

(1)foeign object from engine such as Wear of a piston ring, a cylinder, and a valve guide by engine malfunction

Caution:
Remove the Lock-nut from inside of air cleaner or intake pipe. ( In case the turbocharger was failed by same cause, warranty claim is not accepted )

E.Excessive piston blowby or high internal crankcase pressure cause turbocharger oil leakage from Compressor and turbine seal.

1.The oil which leaked remains in the muffler

It operates until oil is burned out

2.No problem at wheel spin, Clearance of the shaft is reasonable

There is little possibility of the fault of a turbo.

The simple check method

(1)If the lubrication cap of oil, a level gauge, and a blowbye hose are removed, white smoke will disappear.

(2)At the time of idol operation, where a lubrication mouth is removed, the open air is not inhaled from a lubrication mouth. (It turns out that smoke is brought close to an oil supply mouth)

(1) Or when there is condition of (2), there is the possibility that piston blowbye is high. If engine is normal condition, since engine is made to inhale a piston blowbye compulsorily using minus pressure of intake mani, a crank case is always in a minus pressure state, It is to also maintains minus pressure in turbo, and oil does not blow off from a turbo.

The cause considered

(1)Wear of a piston ring, a cylinder, and a valve guide
Since combustion gas leaks excessively, a piston blowbye cannot be inhaled.
Be careful of the car with much mileage.

(2)Blowbye hose and PCV valve are plugged.
A partially closed PCV allows manifold boost to pressurize the crankcase related oil leakage.

· Clean with brakes cleaner
· When it does not operate even if it clean, change it

· If is a confined situation, there is connecting with wire; and the alien substance removal, air blow

G.Be sooted visual appearance

Possibility of exhaust gas leakage, replace gaskets and tighten bolt. This will be a cause of noisy turbo or engine lacks power.
