Troubleshooting

The largest percentage of turbocharger failures are caused by lubrication probrems.Turbocharger problems experienced in the field can often be corrected by system troubleshooting. Always inspect and assess turbocharger condition before removal from the engine.

Engine exhaust emits white or blue smoke

On-engine trouble shooting will help to to expose any any external or engine related causes of turbocharger failure that must be corrected to prevent the failure of a replacement unit.
If engine has been operated for a long time with oil leak from turbocharger, oil coked or sludged in center housing will be created. It is possible to goes to turbocharger failure.
Let's engine troubleshooting.

Oil separator,Crankcase breather
A partially closed PCV allows manifold boost to pressurize the crankcase related oil leakage.
Air cleaner
Dirty air cleaner can cause oil leakage into the compressor by under vacuum.
Oil drain line
Oil seal leakage at turbine end of turbocharger will be caused by restricted and sludged turbocharger oil drain line.
Excessive piston blowby or high internal crankcase pressure cause turbocharger oil leakage from Compressor and turbine seal.
Muffler
Remaining oil in the muffuler caused white smoke until burn off.

Blowby ventilation system ?

High crankcase pressure and excessive piston blowby can be ventilated by PCV flow control valves.PCV valves on spark ignition engines must operate as one way check valves when boost is developed. This reverses the direction of flow in the ventilation system.A partially closed PCV allows manifold boost to pressurize the crankcase.
